Not many organisations travel as much as a circus > that’s why we feel that ‘circus’ is the perfect name for a street food event. Like us, so many of the traders live life on the road, only in town for a short time, so get it while you can! We are lucky enough to be a part of the wonderful Street Food Circus again this year. It’s a 6 week run filled with the best Street food traders from Cardiff and around the UK. We’ve already been there 2 weeks and are back again this weekend and on September 22-25th. Last Year they won ‘Best Street Food Event’ at the British Street Food Awards. We have organisers Neil, Simon and Matt to thank for their valiant efforts.
This year, each trader will be offering a £5 grazing dish, ideal for those who want try as many different traders as possible. You can have our our bleu cheese fries- crispy french fries, sprinkled with crumbled bleu cheese and bleu cheese dip, buffalo sauce and a ‘saucy’ wing on top.
Being Britain, the weather has been a bit on and off but we have come to realize that rain does not stop the people of Cardiff from getting out and enjoying some good eats. Rain or shine you can still have a good time under the big top tent! We camped the first weekend but on the last night got an airbnb which turned out to be a godsend. It was only a ten minute walk from Sophia Gardens, we had a hearty spread for breakfast, and a gorgeous en suite room. However, had it not been for the weather, the actual campsite was quite convenient. It’s called Cardiff Caravan Park with some tent allocations, showers and cafe all within walking distance from Bute Park and the city centre(which we love exploring). The second week someone we met working for another trader was kind enough to offer their empty house, all we had to offer in exchange was a little gin and some wings; great deal. It also turned out to be super convenient for our night out with our trader friends from Brother Thai who lived nearby and showed us the Cardiff bar scene.
It’s always good to go out with other street food traders, so you can exchange ideas and food thoughts over a couple of beers! We also make sure to try as much other food as we possibly can, luckily most other traders have the same idea as well and thus the magical ‘food swap’ was born. Here’s what we have eaten at Street Food Circus so far;
A crispy tempura crab from the Mighty Soft Shell Crab, an incredible Thai Roti from Brother Thai, samosas with a world of flavour from the Purple Poppadom, ice cream frozen in front of you by Science Cream, killer ribs from Hangfire Smokehouse, dreamy donuts from the Early Bird Bakery, tasters from Milgi and of course a naughty bit of fried chicken from Dirty Bird. We also couldn’t go without having at least a couple of things from Seadog, even though they live round the corner from us; the seaside popcorn and the fish burger were as good as ever!
Can’t wait to see what’s new this week!
