The story behind Lola’s Wings.
What would make someone in their 20’s move from New York to the village of Croyde in Devon, England? Well, it turns out, to sell the American staple food, chicken wings!
Lauren McGill was born and raised in New York and spent three years studying Food Service and Event Management at NYSU Oneonta before moving to Manchester, England for the final semester of her college degree. She never intended to stay much longer than that semester, but after booking an impromptu trip to Europe, she met her now partner Si on the airplane they both happened to be flying to Malta on (must have been the romance of Europe’s most budget carrier Ryan Air!).
Then, after going to a few UK festivals and street food events they knew something was missing from the food line ups…authentic New York style chicken wings! Fast forward a few months through a little bit of long distance relationship and tedious visa applications and together Lauren and Si opened their food truck serving free range chicken wings!
Now, you wouldn’t have thought that the little of village of Croyde, Devon (where Lauren and Si were now living, population around 700) would be the best place to start selling New York style chicken wings, but it turned out to be a great base for them to travel around the UK to feed those crying out for some authentic NY style wings. They also trade from the truck and have pop up restaurant nights in the summer when the population of Croyde explodes as people escape to their beachside location!
Having traded at Grillstock, the UK’s biggest BBQ festival, the NFL in London, the British Street Food Awards, and award winning street food event, Street Food Circus it has been a great few years for Lola’s Wings with lots more to come in 2017 including a return to Manchester, where they’ll be catering in the VIP section at Parklife festival, an expansion of the menu to serve more diner style eats and an iphone app in the works!
